"Pless and Jackson Medal of Honor
Sculpture"
Life size bronze sculptures
representing Major Stephen W. Pless, USMC, MOH and Lt. Col. Joe M.
Jackson, USAF, MOH. Dedicated Nov 11, 2009, Veterans Memorial Park,
Newnan, Georgia.
Sculptors: Mark Austin Byrd and Jenelle Armstrong Byrd
Stephen Pless and Joe M.
Jackson were both from Newnan, Georgia and ironically they both received
their MOH's for similiar acts of valor - they each landed their aircraft
on enemy controlled sites and they each rescued three Americans trapped at
these sites. By chance their Medal of Honors were presented in the
same ceremony at the White House as Lyndon Johnson's last official act as
President of the United States.
A few days after the award
ceremony both men returned to Newnan for a welcome home parade attended by
thousands including many Scouts who marched in the parade. Our
sculpture represents Pless and Jackson on that occasion interacting
with a group of spell bound children - serving as role models for the
youth of America.
